Joseph Charles F.X. Reilly, a long time resident of the Hill Section of Scranton, died Saturday morning in the Greenridge Healthcare Center after an illness.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Charles and Loretta Mulrooney Reilly.  He was educated at St. Patrick’s High School, West Scranton and later attended Johnson College.  Prior to retirement he had been employed by the University of Scranton in the maintenance department for over 40 years working solely in Loyal Hall.  He was a member of the University of Scranton Presidents Circle, it’s Scholarship Committee and the Per Deo Society.  On November 10, 1952 the University of Scranton awarded him an honorary degree of Doctor of Human Laws and Letters, Summa Cum Laude.  Upon Joe’s retirement from the university he established a scholarship at the school.  Joe was also a member of the Marywood University Scholarship Committee.  He was devoted member of the Immaculate Conception Church and its 800 club, the Social Action Committee, the bowling league and was an officer of its Holy Name Society.  He was a United States Army veteran serving in the Korean War from 1952 to 1954.  He received the Korean War Medal.

He was a devoted Notre Dame fan and loved traveling to Ireland and many other countries.

Surviving are sisters Katherine Reilly and Ann Regina Reilly both of Scranton; cousins including Jack Ford and Colleen Lutchko and family, Mary Gerrity Loscomb and family, James Douglas and family, Ann Pusateri and family, Joan O’Hara and family, Edith Ford, Joseph Smith and Robert Burke, Esq.

He was preceded in death by his beloved sisters Loretta Reilly in 1982 and Evelyn Reilly in 2002.

Anyone attending the funeral is asked to go directly to the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10am in the Immaculate Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave. Scranton.

Friends may call Tuesday from 4-7pm in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton.

Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
