Ruth Lauretta Jones Bittenbender, Clarks Summit, died Wednesday night in the Lackawanna Health Care and Rehab Center after an illness.  She was the beloved wife of Carl J. Bittenbender who died in 1990.

            Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Edward Jones and Laura Duval Jones and step daughter of the late Verna Phillips Jones.  She was a 1938 graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School and was a member of the former Hyde Park Presbyterian Church, West Scranton.  Prior to retirement she had been employed as a catalog operator for the Sears Department Stores from 1971-1990.

            Surviving are her children Barry Bittenbender and his wife Susan of Clarks Summit and their daughters Brittany and Bridgit; William Bittenbender and his wife Dorothy of Scranton and their children Michael, Brian and Noelle Bittenbender-Watt; Bonnie Richardson and her husband Rev. Phillip of Clarks Summit and their children Pamela Richardson, Megan Swingle and Hillary Tratthen and twelve great grandchildren.

            Preceded in death by a brother Russell Jones.

            The family would like to send a special thank you to Dr. Stephen Jaditz, Mary Ann Petrucci and the entire staff at the Lackawanna County Long Term Center where Ruth was a patient for over 10 years.  They treated her like family throughout her stay and their care and attention made a difficult situation better for Ruth and for our family.

            Funeral services will be held Saturday at 10am in the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton with services by her son in law Rev. Phillip Richardson.

            Friends may call Friday from 4-7pm.

            Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

            In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Scranton Animal Association 1916 Rosanna Ave. Scranton or to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105.
