Robert M. Ludwig, South Scranton, diedFriday morning in the Mt. View Care Center after an illness.   His wife was the former Eileen Y. Walsh who died in 2011.  The couple had been married for over 60 years.

Born 1925 in Scranton, he was the son of the late Matthew and Margaret Lamb Ludwig.  He was a graduate of the Scranton Central High School and attended the University of Scranton.  He was of the Roman Catholic faith.  Prior to retirement he had been employed as a postal carrier with the Unites States Postal Service.  He was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II.   He earned various medals for his service including the Silver Star.  In the citation while being awarded his Silver Star, Major General Livesay commented, “ For gallantry in action on Sept. 20, 1944 near San Lucia, Italy… due to his accurate rifle fire and the his initiative to reposition himself, Private Ludwig courageously held his ground, delivering such a volume of fire into the enemy ranks that they were driven back.  By his indomitable fighting spirit and combat skill, Private Ludwig saved his platoon from being overrun.  His heroic action reflects the highest traditions of the Infantry of the United States Army.”

Surviving are a daughter Patricia Lewis and her husband Fred of Richmond, Virginia;  members of the Ludwig, Walsh and Barrett families.  

He was also preceded in death by a brother James and a sister Mary Claire Eiden.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebratedMonday at 10am in the Immaculate Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave.

Interment will full military honors will be held at a future date in Arlington National Cemetery.
