Laverne Ruth Jones, 95, of Salisbury, Maryland, formerly of N. Lincoln Ave., West Scranton, died Thursday afternoon in the Coastal Hospice in Salisbury.  She was the widow of Benjamin Jones who died in 1990.

Born 1918 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late George and Pauline Lytle Siegfried.  Laverne was a graduate of the Scranton Technical High School and was a member of the United Baptist Church, West Scranton where she had formerly served on its Board of Deacons.  She also attended the Mariner United Methodist Church in Ocean View, Delaware and was also active in the Rock of Ages Ministry.   Laverne was also a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and had been active in the PTA at Charles Sumner School as well as with the Boys and Girls Scouts.

Laverne was a devoted wife and loving mother.  She loved to travel and baseball.

Surviving are daughters Laverne “Verni” Griffiths and her husband John of Dagsboro, DE and Sallie Skrocki and her husband John of Reading; a son David B. Jones and his wife Barbara Harvey of Yarmouth, ME;  grandchildren Jon and Megan Griffiths and Jeffrey and David Skrocki; four great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by a sister Edna Poehleman; brothers Earl and Nelson Siegfried.

Everyone attending the funeral is asked to go directly to the church.  

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 10am in the United Baptist Church, 213 S. Main Ave., Scranton, with services by Rev. Earl O. Cassel, pastor.  

Friends may call Monday from 4-7pm at the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton, PA, 18510.

Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions be made to the United Baptist Church 213 S. Main Ave. Scranton, Pa. 18540.

    Such a special lady…She will be missed by many, many people. So many wonderful memories we will have.,because of Laverne. Cookie bakes, rummage sales, Sonshine cirlce meetings, and who could forget all the dinners we did together. Your the best Laverne. A perfect definition of the word, “CHRISTIAN”. Love, Deb & Paul
