Paul F. Saar, 88, a resident of Gino J. Merli Veterans Center, passed away Sunday in the Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness.

Born on Scranton, he was the son of the late Arthur and Ruth Nape Saar. He was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. During his professional career he worked in the grocery sales business as a food broker retiring from the Hugh T. Gilmore Company. After his retirement he moved to Ft. Myers, FL then back to Scranton in 2009.

He was a member of the F. & A.M. Schiller Lodge # 345, Irem Temple Shrine, Keystone Consistory as well the former Eastern Travelers and its bowling league. Upon completion of High School he joined the U.S. Navy where he served two years in the Pacific Theater during World War II. Among his decorations for service he earned the Philippine Liberation, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign and the American Campaign Ribbons and the Victory Medal.

Paul always had a smile and a good word for everyone he meet.

Surviving are daughters Linda Weiland of Scranton and Judy Burke and her husband Edward of Lake Ariel; grandchildren Cody and Abby Burke of Lake Ariel; several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joan M. Saar; a sister Jane O’Malley; a brother Robert Saar.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday at6:30pm in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton.

Friends may call 4:00pm until time of service.

Interment, private at the convenience of the family.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

    Paul was always a gentleman and a fun to be around person. I too retired from the grocery industry, and I always looked forward to talk with Paul and listen to his stories. I know he will be missed by all of his many friends. So sorry for your loss.
