Junie Alferio

Helen June Alferio, 90, died Friday at the Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center She was the widow of Matthew P. Alferio.

Born in Scranton on June 22, 1924 she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Helen Serio. Known by many as Junie, she was loved by all who knew her. She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

She graduated from Scranton Technical High School in 1942 and maintained a life-long friendship with two of her fellow classmates, Betty Sweitzer Davis and Kay Beyers Foytack. After graduation she worked at Stohr and Fister and the Petersburg Silk Mill where she met her future husband Matthew Alferio as well as USF&G Insurance in Scranton.

She loved to work in her yard, watch The Lawrence Welk Show and get together with her family and friends. She was always ready for a party and loved to go on adventures in the Pennsylvania countryside and beyond.

June was a resident of the Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center and a former member of the Downtown Scranton Senior Center where she would perform in their many stage productions. Her favorite role was playing “Little Orphan Annie”.

The family would like to thank Dr. Sal A. Lawrence Jr. and the staff at Linwood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the kind and compassionate care given to June.

June is survived by her son; Matthew and wife Ann Marie Alferio, Roaring Brook Township, granddaughter Jillian, husband Jordan and great-grandson Jacob Matthew Ferri, Covington Township, PA; also son Gerald and wife K Alferio, Richmond, VA and their children Angeline Pitts, Hanover, VA, Dandridge Marsh, Napa, CA., sisters Clair Calianno,  Shirley Huddy and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death brothers Joseph and John, sisters Gertrude, Rita and Grace and granddaughter Jessica Alferio Clark.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated  Monday at 10:30am in the Immaculate Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave. Scranton.

All attending are invited to go directly to the church.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-5pm in the Vanston and James Funeral Home1401 Ash St. Scranton.

Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions may be made to the donor’s favorite charity.

    Dear Matt and AnnMarie and Family, We are so sorry to hear of the passing of dear June. We are out of town and unable to visit you in person. Know that we are with you in thought and prayer. June will be missed by many. She was a sweet lady and always had a smile for us.
