Eleanor M. Deviney, Scranton, died Saturday after an illness at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit in Dunmore.

Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Raymond and Marie Monaghan Deviney.   She was a graduate of the Scranton Central High School and Marywood University earning a degree in Business and a certification in education.   She was employed by the Scranton School District for 47 years.  She spent most of her career as a beloved kindergarten teacher at the Robert Morris School.    She was active in the Pennsylvania State Education Association and became president of the Scranton branch of the state organization.  

During the tumultuous time of the late 1960’s she was instrumental in gaining the right of teachers to engage in collective bargaining with school boards.   She was always an advocate of justice in the workplace for her fellow teachers.   She was also a member of the Scranton Century Club and Women’s Teachers Association.  Eleanor was a devout member of the Immaculate Conception Church, Scranton.

She traveled extensively during her retirement and spent many happy winters in Naples, Florida.

She was always a devoted daughter and sister.

Eleanor is survived by her brother Rev. Raymond Deviney of Nanticoke; several cousins;  numerous close friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10:30am in the Immaculate Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave. Scranton by Bishop Emeritus James C.  Timlin and Rev. Raymond Deviney.

Anyone attending is asked to go directly to the church.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4-6pm in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton and Thursday morning from 9:30am until time of Mass at the church.

Interment, Cathedral Cemtery.

    Eleanor was a terrific Godmother and I will always appreciate her generosity and support over the years. May she find peace and joy in joining her mother Marie and Aunt Katherine in heaven. May they shop with Angels.

    All our thoughts and prayers to Eleanors’ family. We grew up right next door to Eleanor and Father Ray’s grandmother. What a beautiful lady, always smiling, even when she was taking the clothes off the clothes line. lol They lived in the back house on Cooper St. May Eleanor rest in peace in the arms of our Lord.
