Thomas Charles Smith, Sr.

 

Thomas Charles Smith, Sr. Dunmore, died Tuesday morning in the VA Community Living Center Wilkes-Barre after a courageous battle with ALS. 

Born June 24, 1941 in Elmhurst, Pa, he was the son of the late Emery S. and Margaret Brown Smith.  He was a United States Army veteran serving with the 58th Armed Engineer Company. He attended St. Paul’s High School. He worked in various sales positions throughout his life.

Surviving are children Thomas C. Smith, Jr. and his wife Lisa of Shohola; Mary Catherine Smith and Paula Smith; his former wife Marlyn Chamoni Smith all of Scranton; a grandson Thomas Quinn; sister-in-law Rosemary Smith;  a brother-in-law Joseph Holleran; a cousin Mericia Brown Mills, and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his five brothers James, William, Joseph, John, Jerome and two sisters Alice Watkins and Mary Catherine Holleran.

The family would like to thank all of caretakers at the VA Hospital and the Community Living Center for the wonderful care he received.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10am in the Immaculate Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave. Scranton by the Most Reverend John M. Dougherty, D.D. Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of the Diocese of Scranton.

Friends may call Friday morning from 9am until time of Mass at the church.

Interment, private in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Dunmore.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to John Paul II Medical Research Institute for ALS. 540 East Jefferson Street, Suite 202, Iowa City, IA 52245.

    A good, loyal and honest friend, which began in 1949 at St. Paul’s Grade School. Smitty was one of the gang when from the day he came into our lives. Sorry for his passing, but his memories, always witty, will linger on.
