Eleanor “Ellie” Elgaway

Eleanor Elgaway, West Scranton, died Sunday morning in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit after an illness.   She was the widow of Charles Elgaway who died in 2013.

Born 1930 in Scranton she was the daughter of the late William and Theresa Horvath Katorkas.   Educated in Scranton schools, Ellie was a 1947 graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School. She was a woman of strong Catholic faith.  She worked as a shoe model and singer for the Globe Store and was a talented seamstress specializing in wedding gowns which she made in her home as well as in various local businesses including Leslie Fay and her favorite, Barbini’s.  Finally, at 73,  Ellie retired from Gerrity’s Supermarket in West Scranton where she worked in the bakery.

Ellie was admired, respected and loved by all who knew her. She touched many lives.

The family would like to thank the following caregivers as well as the staff and nurses of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart for the dedicated, compassionate and tireless care given to Ellie during her illness: Trudi Lipinski, Karen Hill, Diane Esposito, Lori Rought, Chrissy Cole, Natalie McKeel and Frankie Howe.

Surviving are daughters Kathy Elgaway of West Scranton and Char Jeffers and her husband Dave of Moosic; numerous friends.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Thursday at 10am in the Immaculate Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave. Scranton.

Friends may call Wednesday from 4-7 in the church.

 Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions be made to Season of Love Homeless Outreach Program c/o The Church of the Good Shepard 1780 N. Washington Ave. Scranton, PA 18509.

Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the care and direction of the Vanston and James Funeral Home, Ash. St., Scranton.
