Lindsay O’Rourke Doherty

Lindsay O’Rourke Doherty died Sunday at Geisinger Community Medical Center.  She is survived by her husband of 10 years, James A. Doherty, III, and their three children, James IV, Kathryn, and Paige.

Born in Washington, DC on September 21, 1980, she was the daughter of Vincent and Bonny O’Rourke of Holden, MA.  She graduated from Wachusett Regional High School in 1998 and the College of the Holy Cross in 2002, where she was the recipient of the Presidential Service Award.  She was employed by the Diocese of Scranton raising money for Catholic education.  Previously, she held sales and marketing positions at the Association of Jesuit Colleges and Universities, the National Association for the Education of Young Children, Bloomingdale’s, and Pearson Education.

She was an active community volunteer, contributing her time and talent to St. Clare/St. Paul School, the Sant’ Andrea Society, and the St. Joseph’s Center.  She was fiercely devoted to her family, particularly her husband and three children, who were the light of her life.  Unfailingly kind, generous, and committed to her faith, she brought out the best in the wide circle of family and friends who adored her.  Those who loved her will remember her radiant smile and enthusiasm, her abiding care and compassion, her sense of humor, and the deep joy she brought to all the lives she touched.

The posting of Lindsay’s passing in today’s Worcester Telegram brought tears to my eyes. I knew Lindsay as a middle school student in Holden, Massachusetts. As her teacher, I recognized Lindsay’s lovely spirit, intelligence, and goodness. She always had a smile on her face, was a friend to everyone, and loved life. I admired her very supportive family and now recognize the wonderful adult she became. My sincere sympathy to Lindsay’s husband, children, and family. There is now a very special angel watching over you.

While I didn’t know Lindsay personally, I am very aware of her good work — her dedication to serving God — her love for her family and friends — her tireless efforts to support and promote Catholic education! We, as a community in which Lindsay lived and worked and laughed and loved and prayed, will miss her. God gave Lindsay a wide variety of gifts which she shared generously, graciously and lovingly. May God bless and comfort all of Lindsay’s family members and friends.

“Marathon” – a poem by Judith Hughes
Running recalls primordial eons, when predator and prey, chasing and escaping, meant to outrun death.
A fall was loss or win – a meal of exhausted meat to fuel another run.
Man’s naked soles run fastest: so remove your shoes! Bare your feet for the sacred path.
Exorcise those predators within, reptilian, carnivorous, nocturnal, pushing you forward, tearing at your gut.
Exertion is a deadly stalker. Rest and stop struggling. Ignore cravings, hunger and hope. Why run?…a predatory thought. Some choose to walk. All finish. Behold the prize of purpose, the goal of glory.
Dehydrated, delirious, doubting, souls hunger, gasp and stumble. Why fear? Be fit. Only the unfit watch the race and cheer: Go! Go! Be faster than the slower thousands. Be master of your heart and breath. Bear the pain: it passes. Receive the offered orange and drink the living water. Throwout your arms to love, your chest to break the golden ribbon. Fall prostrate on the finish line. Hear the words: “Well done!”.
