Marion E. Decker

Marion E. Decker passed away peacefully Wednesday morning, March 14, 2018 at St. Mary’s Villa, Elmhurst, Pennsylvania.

Marion was born November 6, 1922 to the late James H., and Emma Decker. A native of Scranton, she lived most of her life in West Side, and was a member of First United Church of Christ, where she served as a Sunday school teacher, and a member of Consistory and the Young Women’s Guild.

An avid bowler, Marion bowled in several leagues, and represented Scranton on a traveling bowling team that competed annually at State and National tournaments. As one of the city’s top woman bowlers, she was known for her uncanny ability to convert spares. Marion worked into her 70’s beginning at Scranton Tobacco, and later working for Capitol Records before finishing her career at Samuel’s Fuel Oil. Marion served as a Girl Scout leader at Washburn Presbyterian Church, served as a hospital and hospice volunteer, and delivered Meals on Wheels. She and her car were always available for any friend, family member, co-worker or fellow church member who needed transportation.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a sister Leona (Tudor) Williams, a sister Louise Decker, and a brother J. Howard (Peggy) Decker. She is survived by a cousin, Noreen Mattern Haines, several nieces, nephews, great, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Her family “caregivers,” Peg Bailey and Howie Decker, would like to thank the staff and nurses of St. Mary’s Villa Nursing Home for their service, support and dedication to our aunt.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, April 7th at 11am in the First United Church of Christ, 132 N. Bromley Ave., West Scranton with Rev. James Williams, nephew, officiating.

    Peg and Howie,

Marion was a special friend to my mother, Josephine Beckage, while at the Villa. Marion, Judith and Mom enjoyed their lunches together in tbe dining room. I am happy to have met Marion and please know you have my deepest sympathy. May she now rest in peace.

Thank you for the kindness you showed to my aunt during her stay. She loved dining with your mom and appreciated all the friendship.

I laugh every time I think of how my kids would differentiate between Marion, Leona and Louise Of course she was the “tall one”. A very special lady who will be missed. I loved to listen to her talk about the past because her memory was outstanding. RIP Marion.

Thanks Colleen….she was special to so many. Yes…she was a sharp cookie and loved doing the puzzles daily in the paper.
