Lucienne Barber

Lucienne Barber, 96, Scranton, died early Wednesday morning in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit after an illness.  She was the widow of Charles Barber who died in 2011.

Born in Le Houlme, France she was the daughter of the late Henri and Mathilde Lanquetuit Lecouteux.  Lucienne received her formal education in France.  She and Charles met while he was serving in the Army in France. They fell in love and were to be married in France but Charles was shipped back home.  Upon his return to the United States he sent money to France for Lucienne to come to the US so the couple could marry.   They enjoyed 65 years of marriage.  She was a member of the Mary Mother of God Parish, Scranton.  She was an excellent seamstress, making many of her daughters’ clothes.   She was also a seamstress for the Triple A Pants Factory, Scranton.

Surviving are daughters Sally Smargiassi of Shavertown and Denise Brown of Lima, OH;  sisters Denise Frechon and Genevieve LeFebvre both of France;  grandchildren William Smargiassi, Charles Smargiassi and wife Tara and Michele Stoshick and husband David;  great grandchildren Madeline, William, Addison and Alton Smargiassi and David, Matthew and Megan Stosick; a sister in law Kathleen Barber;  nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by her sons in law William Smargiassi and Stephen Brown; siblings Henriette Damien, Bernard and Roger Lecouteux, Ramonde Minil and Mauricette Boudin.

The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit for the wonderful care they gave to their mom while she was at the Hospice.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10:00am in the Mary, Mother of God Parish at Holy Rosary Church 316 William Street Scranton.

All attending are asked to go directly to the church.

Friends may call Sunday from 2-5 pm in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton

Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Sally Meredith Scholarship Fund c/o Lima Community Foundation PO Box 1086 101 N. Elizabeth St. Suite 509 Lima, OH 45802 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.

    So sorry to hear about your mom’s passing. As someone told me in June “Mothers are irreplaceable – we only get one”. You were so lucky to have her all these years.

    My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at this difficult time.
