Barbara A. Redel, a resident of North Abington Township died Monday evening at Allied Skilled Nursing Center after a long illness. She is survived by her husband Walter J. Redel. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on December 1, 2011.

Born in Scranton was the daughter of the late Thomas and Ann W. Acker. She was a graduate of Scranton Central High School class of 1949. Barbara also attended Lackawanna Business College and Keystone College. She was previously employed by the First National Bank of Scranton, Philadelphia National Bank, Cummings House of Glenburn, PA and most recently as Secretary for North Abington Township for the past 30 years. She was a member of the Century Club, Waverly Woman’s Club, Scranton Club, and Waverly Club. Barbara also enjoyed the many years she spent as a Girl Scout Leader at the Scranton Oral School.

She was a member of the Church of the Epiphany, Glenburn, PA.

Also surviving are a son Thomas Acker Redel and his wife Mary of Taylor and a grandson T.J. Redel of South Abington Township; three stepchildren Walter Redel and his wife Karen of Ocoee, FL, Pamela Derbin and her husband Kevin of LeGrange, KY, and Tim Redel and his wife Cindy of Hong Kong; as well as five step grandchildren; a niece; a nephew; and cousins.

She was preceded in death by a brother Charles Acker who died in 1998.

The family would like to thank the staff of Allied Skilled Nursing Center, Two North, for the compassionate care Barbara received during her illness.

Interment will be private at the Hickory Grove Cemetery, Waverly, PA.

A memorial service in celebration of Barbara’s life will be held at the Church of the Epiphany 25 Church Hill Glenburn, PA on Saturday April 21, 2012 at 11:00am.

Friends may call Saturday April 21, 2012 from 10:30am until time of service.

Cremation took place in the Lake Region Crematory, Lake Ariel.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may to the Church of the Epiphany P.O. Box 189 Clarks Summit, PA 18411 or the donor’s favorite charity.

    Walt: I was so very sorry to learn of Barbara’s passing. I know there is nothing one can say at this time to lessen your sorrow and unfortunately I will be unable to attend the memorial service to tell you in person.

    Because of Erna, we will not be able to go to the viewing. Reading the obit shows the advantages ??? of going to a “Big City school”. I also was in the class of ’49 at Central and never knew that Barbara and I were in the same class. As far as I know, I never saw her until the Cummings house. Had a dinner out with Bob and Ruth last Thursday. Ruthie told us about Barb. My thoughts are with you.
