Gary “Buzz” Wilmarth, 60, Scranton, died Wednesday in the Regional Hospital of Scranton after an illness.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late David, Sr and Virginia Ferguson Wilmarth.  He was a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School, Lackawanna College where he earned a degree in management and Penn State University where he earned a degree in marketing and management.  Before his illness he had been employed as taxi cab driver and also for the Gas and Water Company.  He was a member of the American Legion Post 25 and was a volunteer for the American Red Cross where he was awarded numerous awards and was very active with their auction.   He received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the Intervention Center in Scranton.  He served honorably in the 109th Infantry Regiment of the Pennsylvania Army National Guard.

The family would like to thank Drs. Kazmierski, Linker, Cali, Egan, Getz and Prior, the entire Moses Taylor Hospital staff as well as the Regional Hospital of Scranton ICU and Special Care staffs for the wonderful care they gave Gary.

Surviving are siblings Ann Romayne Sternosky and her husband Walter, April Wilmarth,  Sherry Falzone and her husband Edward and Martha Keating all of Scranton;   David L. Wilmarth, Jr and his wife Sally and Blanche Germano and  her husband Michael, III all of Dunmore,; several nieces and nephews; aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother James and a brother in law Donald Keating.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 11am in St. Peters Lutheran Church, 1000 Taylor Ave. Scranton.

Friends may call Monday evening from 6-8pm at the church.

Interment, Abington Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions be made to St Peter’s Lutheran Church 1000 Taylor Ave. Scranton or to the American Red Cross 545 Jefferson Ave. Scranton.

    Dear Wilmarth family….So very sorry to hear about the passing of Buzz. He was a generous, kind person that left his mark on many. He is now resting with the Angels. Our thoughts and heartfelt sympathies to you all.

    Grew up with “Buzzard” and he was a great kid. Hadn’t seen him in 40+ years. Sorry to see you go.
