William J. Thomas, West Scranton, died early Wednesday morning in the VNA Hospice at the Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness.

Born in Scranton,  he was the son of the late William J. and Elsie Krager Thomas.  He was a graduate of West Scranton High School.   Prior to his retirement in 2012 he had been employed as a carpenter at the Tobyhanna Army Depot for over 30 years.  He was a member of the American Legion Kosciuszko Post 207.  He served during the Vietnam era with the United States Navy on the USS Piedmont and after his discharge from the Navy he enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserves with the 92nd APS out of Wyoming, Pa.  His air group was activated during the time of Operation Desert Storm.  After which he also served over seas in Saudi Arabia.  He retired as a Tech Sergeant after 20 years of service.

He was an avid hunter and Philadelphia Phillies fan.   He enjoyed bowling, country line dancing and traveling, especially to Myrtle Beach and Disney World.

He is survived by his companion Elaine Koronik of Newark, DE;  a daughter Stacy Phillips of Scranton; two sons Corey and his wife Kelly and Kyle all of Scranton;  grandchildren TJ Phillips, Karli Phillips, Justin Thomas, Kaleb Thomas, and Mackenzie Thomas all of Scranton; his companion’s daughters Kimberly Chesser and husband Matthew of Dover, DE and Karen Johnson of Newark, DE;  also his companion’s grandchildren Cody, Brittany, Emily and Aiden Chesser  and Daniel Finch all of Dover, DE and Kalina Johnson of Newark, DE.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at Noon in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton.

Friends may call Friday from 5-8pm and Saturday morning from 11am until time of service.

Interment with military honors, Cathedral Cemetery.

    Bill will be missed by so many people. He was a great friend to all. So glad that I met Bill through my BF Elaine Koronik. May God comfort the families of Bill and Elaine.
