Jane McDonald, a life-long resident of the Green Ridge Section of Scranton died Wednesday  in the Jewish Home of Eastern Pa. in Scranton.   She was the widow of Brigadier General John E. McDonald.  The couple had been married for 66 years.

Her given name was Veronica Genevieve Rita Hopkins, but everyone called her simply Jane. Born on January 13, 1921 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Daniel and Mary Linn Hopkins.  Jane was a graduate of the St. Mary of the Assumption School class of 1938.  She attended St. Clare’s Church.

A gentle, honest and beautiful person, Jane loved her husband and children unconditionally. Her best friends were her 3 sisters who were lovingly known together as the “Fearsome Foursome”. She enjoyed flowers, sunsets, whiskey sours, spending time on her front porch, watching her daughter’s ballet performances, and staying at the Langford Hotel in Winter Park, Florida to be near her grandchildren. Always worried about her loved ones safety, Jane’s goodbye always included “Be Careful” and “Don’t drive too fast”.

Surviving are a daughter Linn McDonald and her husband, Richard Senofonte of Scranton; a son, John E. McDonald Jr. and his wife Marie of Winter Park, Florida; grandchildren Megan Pascoe McDonald and Marine Lance Corporal Patrick William John McDonald and his wife Kelli; a sister Mary Hopkins Walsh; nieces and nephews.

Jane was preceded in death by an infant daughter;  brothers Leonard and Walter Hopkins, sisters, Rita Vanston and Louise Kilcullen.

Anyone planning on attending the funeral is asked to go directly to the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30am in St. Clare’s Church, 2301 N. Washington Avenue, Scranton

Friends may call Monday from 5 –7 in the Vanston & James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St.
