Joan E. Samuel, 84, a longtime resident of Clarks Summit and Scranton, died Sunday evening at the Masonic Village at Elizabethtown, PA. after an illness. She was the devoted wife of David E. Samuel, who died on June 9, 2008. At the time of his death, they had been married for 54 years.
Born September 11, 1929 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John T. and Mildred Davies Evans, she was a graduate of West Scranton High School and Keystone College. She was the corporate secretary/treasurer of the family business, Samuel Fuel Co. Inc., Scranton until her retirement.
She was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of Keystone Consistory, Irem Shrine Women’s Auxiliary, Juanita Chapter #8, Order of Eastern Star, St. David’s Society of Lackawanna County, Clarks Summit United Methodist Church and its Elizabeth Circle and former president of Junior Welsh Women’s Society. An avid golfer, bridge player and quilter, she was a former member of the Country Club of Scranton Ladies Golf Association, Scranton Canoe Club Women’s Golf Association, Century Club of Scranton, and Quilt Crafters of Northeastern Pa.
Surviving are a daughter, Barbara Samuel Loftus, Ph.D. and husband Daniel, Moosic; two sons, David J. Samuel and wife Maura Sircus, New York City; and Robert E. Samuel, D.Sc. and wife Colleen, Blue Bell, Pa.; a sister, Marjorie Evans Stevens, Wilmington, DE; five grandchildren Caroline Loftus, Greensboro, NC; Dylan Samuel, New York City; Josephine, Camryn and Dalton Samuel, Blue Bell, Pa; nieces and nephews, Elizabeth Stevens Wilson, Melissa Stevens Howard, Thomas and John Stevens, Wilmington, DE.
In addition to her husband, an infant daughter, Beth Ann, preceded her in death in 1957.
Funeral services will be held Saturday July 5 at 2pm at the Clarks Summit United Methodist Church, West Grove St and Morgan Highway, Clarks Summit by Rev. Amy Raser, pastor.
Friends may call at the church from 1-2pm.
Interment in Abington Hills Cemetery will be private at the convenience of the family.
