Dorothy M. Sweeney

Dorothy M. Sweeney, 86, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister and aunt passed away on August 2, 2014 in her home after a 7 year battle with cancer.  She was surrounded by her loving family when she was called home to God.

Dorothy was born in Scranton in 1928.  She was the daughter of the late John and Elsie (Mursch) Foytack.  She graduated from Technical High School .  She had several jobs earlier in life but was always proudest of being called a full-time Mom.

Dorothy was a woman of strong faith who loved God.  She was member of Parker Hill Church.  She enjoyed and appreciated the simple things in life, from reading her Bible, the newspaper, cover-to-cover, and playing Scrabble, to talking about the day’s breakfast, lunch and dinner selections with everyone she came in contact with that day.  She also made it a point to tell everyone about her three sons.  She was a kind, caring and loving mother, grandmother and friend and will be greatly missed by all.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James V. Sweeney, brothers, Jake, Edward, Charles, Ronald, Francis and William Foytack.  Dorothy is survived by a brother, Paul Foytack and wife Kitty (TN) and sons, Jim Sweeney and wife, Jackie, Springbrook Twp, Ron Sweeney and wife, Tracy, Jessup and Dan Sweeney and wife Sue, Dickson City, Grandchildren, Alyssa Chiaro and husband Nick, Jim, Amanda, Kayla and Dan Sweeney and Great Grandchildren, Anna, Mia and Nick Chiaro and several cousins, nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank Home Health Care of Moses Taylor, Commonwealth Home Health & Hospice of NEPA and caregiver, Christine Ballah.

A memorial service will be held at the Vanston-James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash Street, Scranton on Wednesday, August 13th at 10:30 a.m.

A visitation time will be the morning of the funeral at 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Burial will follow at Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Scranton Rescue Mission, 8 West Olive Street, Scranton, PA, where Dorothy enjoyed volunteering before her illness.
