Ruth Estelle Brust

September 11, 2014
Ruth Estelle Brust, 92, passed away peacefully with family by her side on September 11, 2014, in Scranton, Pa.
The daughter of Frank and Pearl Saunders, she was born on January 5, 1922. Ruth grew up on the family farm she loved so dearly in Leesburg, Virginia. During World War II, she worked in the Pentagon in Washington D.C., where she met and married her late husband of 67 years, Vincent. After marriage, she moved with Vincent to his hometown of Scranton, where they lived the remainder of their lives in the Hill Section, in the home Vince’s father had built. There she raised their two daughters and two sons.
Ruth was active in the Catholic church, and worked for many years as an administrator for Immaculate Conception Church.
Wonderfully creative, she enjoyed reading, painting and gardening. All these activities made her happy, but she may have been happiest looking after her roses, which she cultivated for decades.
She took great pride in raising her four children and helped them whenever possible in their own journeys through life. She remains an inspiration to her family and friends and will be missed by all those who were fortunate to have known her.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Vincent.
Ruth is survived by her children, Elaine Legate and husband, Chuck; Suzanne Woodyatt and companion, Ruben Barreiro, all of Scranton; Vincent Jr. and wife, Paula of Olyphant; and James of San Francisco; her seven grandchildren, Joe Liberatore Jr., Michele Legate-Kastreva, Mark Woodyatt, Holly Legate, Heather Finnerty, all of Scranton; Benjamin Brust of Stamford, Conn.; and Danny Brust of Pittsburgh; and great-granddaughter, Victoria, who gave Ruth so much pleasure during her final year.
Ruth’s family would like to offer a special thanks to nursing staff and personnel of Dunmore Healthcare Center who made her short stay there comfortable, also, CNA Tiffany Ashton, who provided pleasant conversation and exceptional care.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. in Immaculate Conception Church, 801 Taylor Ave., Scranton. Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.
All who are attending the funeral are invited to go directly to the church.
Friends may call Monday, Sept. 15 from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton., Scranton.
Donations may be made in her name to the Albright Memorial Library, 500 Vine St., Scranton, PA 18509.
