Gary W. Evans, born July 13, 1946 of West Scranton, died Wednesday at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit following an illness.

Born in Scranton son of the late William J. and Ruth Evans, he was a graduate of West Scranton High School Class of 1964 and the University of Scranton Class of 1968 where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in education. He also attended the University of Scranton Graduate School majoring in counseling education. He was a member of the Embury United Methodist Church.

He served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Independence and was honorably discharged in 1972.

Gary played guitar and sang lead and harmony vocals in several local popular rock bands. He loved sports, music, movies, and riding his Honda motor scooter. Gary was a dedicated fan of the New York Yankess. Pittsburg Steelers, and Penn State Nittany Lions.

Prior to retirement he worked at Astro Apparel in South Scranton.

Gary will be missed by his friends, family, neighbors, fellow musicians and that “special someone” who captured his heart with her sweetness and loyalty.

He would like to especially thank Dr. Joseph Bannon, Dr. Harmar Brereton, Dr. Kurt Moran, Dr. Timothy Hou, Dr. Martin Hyzinsky, Dr. Gerald Gilbert and the staff of each for their kindness, compassion and professionalism.

Gary is survived by an uncle, an aunt, and several cousins, and his companion Betty Ann Zilla of Peckville.

Funeral Services will be Saturday at 10:00am in the Vanston & James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton.

Friends may call Friday from 5:00-7:00pm.

Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
