Peter C. Rauner, a lifelong resident of the Petersburg Section of Scranton, died Saturday night in the Gardens at Green Ridge after an illness.   His wife of 69 years in the former Doris Monie.  The couple was married in 1946.

Born in Scranton, he was the son of the late Frederick and Irene Phillips Rauner.   He was a graduate of the former Scranton Technical High School and was a member of the Hickory Street Presbyterian Church.    Pete was a United States Navy veteran serving 20 years.  He was stationed in the Pacific on the USS BARB submarine during WWII.

Also surviving are nieces and nephews including Jim and Ross Oliver, niece Jane Charnovich, Debbie, Alison and Allen Schunk.

Funeral services will be private at the convenience of the family.

Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.

    it was sad to read today that another Barb submariner has pasted away.
    My step father Joe Fanelli also served on the Barb during WW2. Joe pasted away many years ago. I leave you with these words:

    “There is a port of no return, where ships may ride at anchor for a little space.
    And then some starless night the cable slips, leaving only an eddy at the mooring place.
    Gulls veer no longer, Sailor rest your oar.
    No tangled wreckage will be washed ashore.”
