Connie Lou Slater, resident of West Scranton, died Friday in VNA Hospice Inpatient Unit at the Geisinger Community Medical Center. She was the widow of Franklin Slater who died July 25, 2014. The couple had been married 57 years.
Born in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Constance Thomas Markiewicz. She was a graduate of the West Scranton High School and was a longtime member of the Jackson St. Baptist Church. At the church she was very active in the following groups: the children’s nursery, she served as a Sunday school teacher, a member of the Quilter’s Group and was member and treasurer of it’s Young At Heart group. Connie Lou also made blankets for the Birthright of Scranton. She enjoyed baking and gardening and was a mother to everyone. Connie Lou passed her love of cooking and baking to her grandson, Nathan, who took care of her in her later years.
The family would like to express their gratitude to the VNA Home Health and Hospice for the wonderful care given to Connie over the past several months.
Surviving are a daughter Sandra Carter and partner Timothy Vancosky of Scranton; sisters Marlene Castellano of Factoryville and Bernice Handzel and husband Stanley of New York; grandchildren: Adrianna Carey and husband Adams Berzins, Nathan David Slater-Carter and Mericia Mills, and John Woloszyn and wife Susan; six great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews and godmother to her grandchildren, Cheryl Plauga-Kenyon.
She was preceded in death by infant sons Franklin David Slater and David Louis Slater; daughter Mindy Lou Slater.
Funeral services will be held Thursday at 10am in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton
Friends may call Wednesday from 4-7pm.
Interment, Fairview Memorial Park, Elmhurst.
