Kaitlin Hennemuth Reap

Kaitlin Grace Reap, 30, of New York, NY passed away on October 21st at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Manhattan after a courageous sixteen month battle with a rare and aggressive form of cancer. She was born on April 15th, 1985 to John M. Hennemuth and M. Diane Hennemuth of Waverly. Katie is survived by her husband Kyle Reap; her father- and mother-in-law Brian and Lynne Reap of Scranton; her brother Jake and wife Rachel of Connecticut and brother Andy and wife Maureen of Maryland; her sister-in-law Cara Raymond and her husband Charles of Plymouth Meeting; and seven nieces and nephews.

Katie attended Our Lady of Peace School in Clarks Green and was a graduate of Scranton Preparatory School class of 2003, the Pennsylvania State University class of 2007, New York University School of Nursing class of 2011 and she was pursuing her Nurse Practitioner Masters while working was a Registered Nurse at NYU Medical Center Neuro Unit at the time of her diagnosis; a job she loved.

Katie had the kindest of hearts, a fun, witty manner, and a positivity of spirit which were a magnet for hundreds of friends throughout her thirty years. They in turn blanketed her with love and support that gave her incredible strength during her sixteen months of illness. We, the family, will be forever grateful for this love.

Katie particularly enjoyed her nieces and nephews Maddie, Jack, Mikey, Tanner, Molly, Libby and Matthew Hennemuth. She loved all of them like they were her own children and they adored her in return.

Kate fought her battle with grace, dignity and hopeful determination. We are so proud of her. We would like to thank Dr. William Tap, Chief of the Sarcoma Oncology service at MSKCC, who, in addition to delivering the best and most compassionate care we have ever observed, spent a great deal of time and effort pursuing funding for research and treatment of the difficult category of rare cancers that afflicted Katie. In lieu of flowers we would like to honor her memory by helping to fund a special project for sarcoma research in Katie’s name. Please stay tuned for further details on this.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday, the 26th at 10:00am at St. Peter’s Cathedral, 315 Wyoming Ave. Scranton.

Anyone attending the Mass is asked to go directly to the Church.

Friends may call Sunday, the 25th from 2:00-5:00pm in the Vanston & James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St. Scranton.

Dear John and Family: Please accept my deepest sympathy. Our rosary and prayer groups has been praying for Katie and your family over the last 16 months. We have so admired her dignity and strength as we’ve been following her blog. Her husband, Kyle, is amazing, as are their friends and families. She has meant the world to us in her words, beauty and courage and changed our lives forever even though we never met her in person. God bless the angel Katie who has flown away to a new life and never to be forgotten. God bless you all.
