Mary C. Garvey

 Mary C. Garvey, a resident of North Scranton, died Monday morning in the Holy Family Residence after an illness.   She was the widow of Joseph X. Garvey, Sr who died in 2010.   At the time of his death the couple had been married 65 years.

Born 1921 in Pittsburgh, she was the daughter of the late Mr and Mrs Frederick Pfannenschmidt.  Mary was a graduate of St George High School in Pittsburgh and The Pittsburgh School of Nursing, where she obtained her Registered Nurse Degree. Mary was a United States Navy Nurse World War II veteran serving honorably in the Pacific Theater and earned the rank of Lieutenant.

She was a member of the Mary, Mother of God Parish, North Scranton.   She was employed as a registered nurse at both Mercy Hospital and Allied Services.   She was a member of the Catholic Women’s Association, the North Scranton Neighborhood Association and the University of Scranton Purple Club.

Surviving are her six children Joseph and his wife Fran, Frederick, Don and his wife Helen, Charles and his wife D’Anne, Madolyn “Midge” MacArthur and Gerald “Gibby” and his wife Kay;  a sister Rita Derrick; grandchildren Joe, Christian, Jenny, Fred, Alana, Chucky, Gregory, Jeremiah, Josh, Bridget and Eileen; thirteen great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her siblings George, John, Charles and Alice.

The family wishes to sincerely thank the little sisters of the poor, nurses, clergy and staff of the Holy Family Residence and Dr. Barry Minora for the wonderful care provided to their mother.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 10:30am in the Chapel at the Holy Family Residence (2nd Floor) 2500 Adams Ave Scranton by Rev. E. Francis Kelly, chaplain.

Friends may call Friday from 4-7pm in the Maloney Lounge at the Holy Family Residence.

Interment with Military Honors in Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to Holy Family Residence 2500 Adams Ave. Scranton 18509 or to Mary, Mother of God Parish 316 Williams St. Scranton 18508.
