Edward W. Gething, Petersburg Section of Scranton, died Wednesday morning in the Geisinger Community Medical Center after complications from surgery. His wife of 42 years is the former Rosemary Lavin.
Born 1932 in Reading, he was the son of the late Elizabeth Parry Gething and Edward Gething. He was a graduate of West Scranton High School. He was a longtime employee of the former Hadden Craftsmen and later retired from the RR Donnelly Company. Ed served our country honorably in the Unites States Army during the Korean Conflict. He also enjoyed listening to and playing music, and in his younger years he played in a band.
Also surviving are sons Sean and his wife Rachel of Sonestown, Timothy and his wife Jennifer of Ridley Park and Ryan of Scranton; daughter Sheri Canfield and her husband Dennis of Meshoppen; a step daughter Mary Ann Bone of West Chester; brothers William and his wife Mary Ann and Robert of Scranton; a sister Sandy Battenberg of Scranton; 11 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren; a daughter in law Janet Gething of Florida; brother in laws Thomas Lavin and his wife Cindy of Scranton and John Lavin and his wife Marti of Arizona; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by sons James and Edward, Jr.; a sister Margaret Stadler.
A Blessing Service will be held Monday at 10am in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton officiated by Rev. Joseph Sica, Senior Priest of the Immaculate Conception Parish.
Friends may call Sunday from 2-4pm.
Interment with military honors in Cathedral Cemetery.
