Mary Gene Butler

Mary Gene Butler, 82, passed away peacefully Tuesday, May 8, 2018, at home surrounded by her family.  Mary Gene, born in Scranton, the daughter of the late John B. and Genevieve Hayes McDade, was married to the late Bruce E. Butler, for forty-one years.  Mary Gene was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who will be deeply missed.

Mary Gene graduated from Marywood Seminary and continued her education at Marywood College where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology.  She interned at Mary Immaculate Hospital in Jamaica, New York.  She later returned to Marywood and, in 1973, earned a Master of Art in Counselor Education.

Mary Gene joined Moses Taylor Hospital in 1968 as Program Director of the Certified Laboratory Assistant School.  She was named Chief Medical Technologist of Mid-Valley Hospital in 1978.  In 1978, she also took a second job as a night school Counselor at the Worthington Scranton Campus of Penn State University, specializing in veterans seeking education through the Vietnam Era GI Bill.

In 1980, Mary Gene played a major role in opening the Scranton Medical Technology Consortium, a coordinated program for the internships of students earning their bachelor of science degrees in medical technology, and was appointed the program director.

During her career, she was also the director of research immunology for the Knickerbocker Foundation (now Pfizer) in New York, a research technologist in immunology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York, a medical technologist at Fairfax Hospital in Falls Church, Va., a medical technologist at Georgetown University Blood Bank, and a medical technologist at Mercy Heights Hospital, Scranton.

Mary Gene is survived by her six children, Ann Reese; Bruce Butler and wife, Gina; Erin Butler Conner and husband, Christopher; Jeffrey J. Butler and wife, Rebecca; Mary Gene Eagen and husband, Todd; Brian J. Butler and wife, Emily; eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Genevieve Tuthill and husband, Joe, and sister Ann Dwyer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, her brothers John P. McDade and Joseph M. McDade, and other members of her loving family.

The funeral will be Friday with Mass of Christian burial to be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. in St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Avenue, Scranton.  Those attending the funeral mass are asked to go directly to the church.  Relatives and friends may call on Thursday 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash Street, Scranton.  Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Sacred Heart, 600 Baltimore Drive, Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.

    Ann,Erin,Bruce,MaryGene,Brian,Jeff and family, I can’t even begin to express my deepest sympathy to you all for the loss of your beloved mom. She has made such an impact in my life, she was my boss, my mentor, my inspiration, but mostly , my dear friend. I will miss her so much. She has touched so many lives, you all should be nothing but so proud of her, she was truly a kind and wonderful person. I will never forget her.

    I am not able to travel to the services but my thoughts are with you as you celebrate your mom. She was a very accomplished woman!
