Francis J. Gaul, Jr.

Francis J. Gaul, Jr., West Scranton, passed away Friday in the Geisinger Community Medical Center after an illness.  His wife of  56 years is the former Patricia Schirra.

Born 1940 in Scranton, he was the son of the late Francis and Marie Longworth Gaul and was a graduate of West Scranton High School.  Prior to his retirement he had been employed by the Clarks Summit State Hospital for 35 years.   During his time at the state hospital he was instrumental in the formation of the workers union at the hospital.  Frank was a member of the St Patrick’s Parish, West Scranton.  He was also a member of the Lions Club in Scranton where he served as President, volunteered as a Little League coach for the East Scranton Little League.  He was a United States Navy veteran serving honorably during the Vietnam War. 

Frank loved spending July’s at Lake Sheridan with his family.  He loved his bird, Coco. Francis enjoyed listening to his grandson Matthew’s daily stories and granddaughter Casey’s crazy days from school and work.  His favorite saying that he used daily was “It’s a good day to have a good day.”

Also surviving are a son Timothy Gaul and wife Sandy of West Scranton and a daughter Donna Gillette and husband Kevin of Madisonville ;  grandchildren Casey, Matthew, Shannon, Erin, Kevin, Jr., Kayla, Chelsea, Robert and Tara;  five great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by a sister Marie Gaul and brothers Donald and William Gaul.

All CDC guidelines including the mandatory use of facial coverings and proper social distancing will be strictly enforced. Please be prepared to pay your respects in a timely manner and exit the funeral after doing so.  Temperature checks will also be given upon entering the funeral home. 

The family invites all attending the funeral to go directly to the church.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Wednesday at 10am in the Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel 1605 Oram Street, West Scranton.

Friends may call Tuesday from 4-7pm in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton.

Interment with military honors, Cathedral Cemetery.
