Jean Stanko

Jean Stanko, 89, of Scranton, passed away peacefully following a brief illness in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit.   She was the widow of John Stanko who died in 1989.

Jean was born June 29, 1932 to the late Anthony and Jenny Laboranti and was also the step daughter of the late Mary Burke Laboranti. She was a graduate of West Scranton High School and prior to her retirement she had been employed in the garment industry.   She was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church.

Jean, also known as Aunt Jean to many, was truly devoted to her family and loved spending time with them.   She was always there for anyone who needed her and never missed a chance to celebrate all family events.  Up until a few years ago Jean walked Lake Scranton seven days a week.  She was a member of the JCC where she attended aerobic classes and also made many friends. 

She was an inspiration to many and will be greatly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. 

Jean is survived by her loving daughter, Debbie Preno with whom she resided with for the past 25 years;  her grandson Russell Preno, III; granddaughter Lori Goetz;  great grandchildren James and Grace Goetz and Alexandra Stanko;  her sister Margaret Dougherty;  brothers Anthony Laboranti and wife Carol, Frank Laboranti and wife Maryellen and Joseph Laboranti;  her late son’s companion Bonnie Yagle;  as well as many nieces and nephews and dear friends.

She was also preceded in death by her son Joseph Stanko; grandson mark Stanko; son in law Russell Preno, Jr.;  sister Judy Marichak;  brother in law Andrew Marichak;  brother John Laboranti;  sisters in law Peggy Laboranti and Lynn Laboranti;  brother in law Joseph Dougherty; her nieces Mary Dougherty and Jenny Laboranti.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 11am in the Immaculate Conception Church 801 Taylor Ave. Scranton.

Friends may call Monday morning from 9am until time of Mass at the church.

Interment, Cathedral Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions be made to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart 600 Baltimore Dr. Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702 or to the donor’s favorite charity.
