Our mom died in the early morning Thursday, in her sleep, in her own bed, and in her own home with a faithful caregiver by her side. Her passing was preceded by a brief illness. Catherine was three days shy of her 97th birthday. We realize that we were able to have our mother longer than most; and we are very grateful.
Catherine was married for over fifty years to the late Raymond Kapp who died in 2003.
Born at home, in Scranton, during an especially cold January, Catherine was the fifth girl in a row, in a family of six children. Her parents are the late James and Clara Cawley Regan.
Upon graduation from Scranton Technical High School, Catherine entered the work force. Her business course skills led to office jobs at various NEPA locations. She worked at the Murray plant after WWII prior to marriage and starting a family.
With her five children in school, Mom worked as a receptionist for Dr. Larkin. Later Catherine worked for Drs. Wright, LaLuna, and Heim in an office manager position. That office grew to become Hematology and Oncology Associates of NEPA from which she retired.
Mom was just what a mother should be: loving, kind, encouraging, and generous. She was a member of, and model of the core values of the “greatest generation”. Education was set as a high priority. Family and friends were foremost. Milestones, holidays and achievements were all celebrated. As kids, as well as adults, everyone was welcome at our house. Our Dad, along with Mom were selfless in making our house a home to be cherished, and fondly remembered.
Mom’s split pea soup will me missed by many, and not so much by many others who were not fans of favorite concoction; second only to a highball. Cheers Mom!
Catherine had five children, fourteen grandchildren, and fifteen great-grandchidlren plus many wonderful nieces and nephews.
Surviving are son Raymond and wife Patti of Middletown, NY, and their children Sara Gilvary and husband Keith, Daniel and wife Timea, Adam and his wife JoAnn, Emily and husband Ryan; daughter-in-law Amy, Erwinna and her son William; son Dennis and his wife Susan of Dunmore, and their children Eileen Smith and husband Lee, Brian and his wife Jennifer, daughter-in-law Alla and daughter Alice; daughter Alice Azzarelli of Dunmore and her children Alyssa, John, and Robbie; son John and his wife Donna of Scranton and their children Danielle Rozelle and Lindsay Rozzelle.
Great-grandchildren Maddie, Avery, Sam, Kay, Evan, Ryan, Oliver, Jack, Connor, Grace, Alice, Harry, Calen, Maeva, and Theo.
Catherine was preceded in death by a son Bill and a grandson Timmy. Also deceased are sisters Mary (George), Betty (Harry), Jane (Bill), Alice (Bill) and a brother Joe (Joan), also in-laws Edward, Maureen, Grace, Jean, George, Bobby, Evelyn and James.
The family would like to thank Catherine’s longtime physician Dr. Charles Deck and a favorite physical therapist Jean Maril. Catherine was also attended by a capable, concerned and compassionate cadre of women over the past few years. The current crew members are Kelly, Pat E., Pat K., Lois, Cindy, Dee, Katy, and Jennifer. Thank you for your faithful service.
