Shirley Mae Samuel Zang of Elmhurst Twp. died Thursday night at Community Medical Center after an illness. She was the widow of William C. Zang, who died in 2005.
Born in Scranton, daughter of the late Fredrick and Maud Daugherty Samuel, she was a 1951 graduate of West Scranton High School. Before retirement, she had been employed by Samuel Fuel Co. and then by the Montour Oil Co. She was a devoted Christian who always put others ahead of herself. She was a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was cherished by all of her family and friends.
She enjoyed playing the piano, singing to her great-grandchildren, crocheting and, of course, bingo. She will be deeply missed even though we know she is now reunited with the love of her life. The family would like to thank Dr. Batzel, Dr. Olsen, Dr. Sebastianelli and Dr. Speicher as well as all of the nursing staff that were so kind to her throughout her care.
Surviving are two daughters, Karen L. Ferke and husband, Allan; and Marilyn J. Podest and husband, Rudy, all of Elmhurst Twp.; a sister, June Jones, Scranton; three grandchildren, Christina Brundage, Daniel Podest and Kelly Diaz; seven great-grandchildren, Hailey and Liam Brundage, Damario, Christian, Gabriel and Zechari Diaz and Daniel Hunter Podest.
She was also preceded in death by three children, William, Robin and Cheryl; a brother, Fredrick; and a sister, Lillian Powell.
A memorial service will be Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Vanston and James Funeral Home, 1401 Ash St., Scranton, by the Rev. Pat Lee.
Friends may call Saturday, 10 until time of the service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society , 712 S. Keyser Ave., Taylor, PA 18517.
