Catherine “Kay” Jarbola, Scranton, died Friday morning under the compassionate care of The Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore, after an illness. She was the loving wife of Andrew J. Jarbola, Jr., of Scranton. In September of 2016, they celebrated 61 years of marriage.
A lifelong resident of Scranton, she was the daughter of the late John “Jack” and Helen Bagdonas Jurkonie. She was employed by the Moses Taylor Hospital Service Corporation until her retirement. Kay was of the Catholic faith.
Kay was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, sister in law and aunt. She enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. She will be deeply missed.
Surviving are two sons, The Honorable Andrew Jarbola, III and wife, Mary Ann, Moscow; and Steven Jarbola and wife, Mary Ellen, Scranton; grandsons Andrew IV and wife, Whitney, Hummelstown; Justin and girlfriend, Kelsey, Philadelphia; Steven, Jr. and Jeffrey, Scranton; brother, William Jurkonie and wife, Sharon, Tennessee; sister in law Carolyn Gallo and husband, Frank, Moosic; sister in law Audrey Jurkonie, Clarks Summit; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by a brother Jack Jurkonie, sister in law Margaret Jurkonie and nephew Frankie Gallo.
The family would like to thank the staff at the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, the nurses and doctors in the ICU and second floor at the Moses Taylor Hospital, Dr. Martin Penetar and Dr. Steven Opsosnik for all of their remarkable care during the final weeks of her life.
Anyone who knew Kay would tell you she was a very strong willed woman and that was evident when she left the family specific instructions for her funeral. Such as her desire to be cremated, no photograph for her obituary, no viewing hours and a private funeral service to be arranged by the Vanston and James Funeral Home.
The family strongly encourages memorial contributions be made in Kay’s honor to the Hospice of the Sacred Heart 600 Baltimore Dr. Wilkes-Barre, PA 18702.
Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the care and direction of the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton, 18510.

I worked with Kay on Electric St. We had lunch together and she made me laugh so hard. I could tell you a story, but it’s totally inappropriate for the web. Kay was awesome, always willing to help me when she could or at least point me in the right direction. I give my best to the family at this difficult time.
