Joan Burak, of Scranton, born in Throop, passed away peacefully Wednesday morning at home.
As Joan stated in recent days- I was born, I lived, and I died.
Born on April 11, 1929 in Throop, PA she was the daughter of the late William and Sophie Bunjo – Ardziejewski. She was a graduate of Throop High School and worked in her parents’ store, The Throop Market, where she met Steve Burak, a young milkman. They married in 1950 and raised a family of six children in Nicholson. She served as Kitchen Supervisor at Keystone College prior to her retirement and was known for her strong work ethic. Joan was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Steve, who passed away in 2011, and sisters Dorothy Sequeria and Malvina Houck.
Surviving are daughters JoAnn Burak and her husband David Andrews of Louisiana, Christine “Tina” Burak of Texas, and Terri Quinn and her husband Joseph, of White Haven; sons Stephen Burak and his wife Bonnie of Colorado, Michael Burak of California, and Bill Burak of Louisiana; 7 grandchildren; 4 great – grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, December 11 at 10:00am in St. Paul’s Church, 1510 Penn Ave. Scranton, of which Joan was a parishioner.
Friends may call Saturday morning from 9am until the time of Mass.
Internment, St. John the Baptist Cemetery, Throop.
Arrangements have been entrusted to and are under the care and direction of Vanston and James Funeral Home, Scranton.
In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions may be made to Friends of the Poor or Allied Services Hospice.
