Betty J. Freethy

Betty J. Freethy, 96, of Clarks Summit passed away Monday afternoon in Marywood Heights after a brief illness with her family by her side.  She was the devoted wife of Ray H. Freethy who died in 2012. The couple had been married 61 years.

Born in 1927 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late Evan and Ruth Wilshire Evans and was a graduate of West Scranton High School.  She was a faithful member of the Trinity Congregational Church where she was an active participant in its’ Trinity Class, Rummage sales and the baking of Welsh cookies. 

Betty was a wonderful wife and mother who always put the needs of others before herself.  She dedicated herself to being a good wife, mother and grandmother who supported her family in all of their endeavors.  She will be deeply missed. 

The family would like to acknowledge the entire staff at Marywood Heights for the care and compassion they afforded not only to Betty in her final days but to the entire family.  Their kindness will never be forgotten.

Surviving are sons James Freethy of Scranton and Robert Freethy and his wife Barbara of Dalton; grandchildren Michael Freethy of Dalton, Jason Freethy and his wife Melissa of Tunkhannock and Jill Marie Lopez and her husband Andrew of Tennessee; great grandchildren Aiden and Peyton Freethy and Simone and Elyssa Lopez.

She was also preceded in death by her son and daughter in law Thomas and Donna Freethy.

Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11am in the Vanston and James Funeral Home 1401 Ash St. Scranton officiated by Rev. Jeremy Mullen.

Friends may call Saturday morning from 10am until the time of service.

Interment, Fairview memorial Park, Elmhurst.

In lieu of flowers the family encourages memorial contributions be made to the Trinity Congregational Church 229 S. Main Ave. Scranton, PA 18504 or to the St Jude Children’s Research Hospital 501 St. Jude Place Memphis, TN 38105

    To Betty’s family, she was such a sweet person. I enjoyed talking to her after church. I’m very sorry I wasn’t able yo attend the visitation. I am sending my deepest condolences. May she rest in peace. Wishing you peace and comfort at this difficult time.
