Eugene Augustine Curtin, M.D., 82, of Clarks Green passed away on Monday evening at Scranton Regional Hospital. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Jean McDonald Curtin.
Gene was born and raised in Green Ridge, the son of the late Eugene Augustine Curtin, M.D. and Katharine Megargee Curtin. He was a proud member of the first graduating class at Scranton Prep in 1947. He went on to the University of Scranton and Jefferson Medical College. Gene moved back to Scranton to practice obstetrics and gynecology at Mercy Hospital for more than 40 years. He was a consummate professional who took great pride in the fact that he helped bring life into the world. He delivered more than five thousand babies at Mercy Hospital during the course of his career. There were very few places Gene could go where some proud parent would not point to a six-foot-tall teenager and say, “Look at my son! You delivered him!” He treasured those moments and was honored to work in this community.
Most of all, Gene Curtin was defined by his devotion to his wife, children, and his grandchildren. A holiday fanatic, Gene loved nothing more than to spend a Fourth of July blasting Sousa marches, making homemade ice cream, and laughing with his family and friends. His legacy is his enthusiasm and appreciation for life.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by the following: four children, Dennis Curtin of Selinsgrove; Peter Curtin and his wife, Kitsy Hart Curtin, of Waverly; Margaret Curtin Kelly and her husband, Robert Kelly, Jr., of Clarks Green; and Susan Curtin and her husband, Jonathan Couch, of Clarks Summit; six grandchildren, Peter Kelly, Kevin Kelly, Claire Kelly, Griffin Curtin, Eugene Curtin, and Julius Couch; six siblings, Frances O’Brien of Charlottesville, Virginia; Nancy Quinn of West Chester, Pennsylvania; Laila Cuddy of Auburn, New York; Mary Smith of Suffolk, Virginia; Timothy Curtin of Clarks Summit, Pennsylvania and Rev. Vincent Curtin, S.J., of Mooresville, North Carolina; brothers-in-law William Quinn, James Cuddy and Bernard Smith; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Katharine Curtin.
The family would like to extend its sincere thanks to Dr. William Heim, Doctors John H. Doherty and Kevin Colleran, Dr. Thomas M. Roe, Dr. Louis Adamo, Dr. Jay Vanston, Mary Lawhon Triano, RN, the staff of Scranton Regional Hospital, and Hospice of the Sacred Heart.
