Vera L. McBride Johnson

Vera L. McBride Johnson, 90, of Dickson City , formerly of Scranton, passed away Tuesday morning surrounded by her loving family in the Hospice of the Sacred Heart Inpatient Unit, Dunmore after an illness. She was the widow of Donald A. Johnson who died in 1992. Having met in Jacksonville, Florida where they were both stationed in the Navy, they married in 1946, enjoying 46 years of marriage.
Born 1923 in Scranton, she was the daughter of the late William and Ethel Miller McBride. Vera was a member of the Covenant Presbyterian Church, Scranton and a 1941graduate of Scranton Central High School. She attended Hunters College and Oklahoma A&M College while serving in the US Navy Waves. Vera was a PTA President for the South Scranton Jr. High School and a den mother for Cub Scout Pack 16. Prior to her retirement she had been employed by Claude Martin Insurance and Aetna Casualty.
Surviving are a son Gary L. Johnson, Sr. and his wife Kimberly of Dickson City; grandchildren Wendy McKitish and her husband Gene, Gary L. Johnson, Jr. and his wife Jen, Darren F. Johnson and his fiancé Elizabeth Norton, Chad Hanicak and his fiancé Fran Dimaria and Bradley Hanicak and his wife Mandee; nine great grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her son Donald K. Johnson; a sister Miriam Beckerle; a brother William McBride.
Vera’s family would like to thank her physician Dr. Wayne Weston, the Sixth Floor nurses and aides at Geisinger Community Medical Center, nurses of the Hospice of the Sacred Heart, Dunmore and a special thank you to hospice nurse Lois Rinaldi for all the compassionate care they gave Vera.
As per Vera’s wishes there will be no public calling hours.
The funeral will be private at the convenience of the family.
Interment, Dunmore Cemetery.
